      well you will only be able to connect two devices to your mobo with the IDE cable. You can buy a little adapter that plugs into a SATA port and then has an IDE on the backside. Had to do that for my dad’s pc.

      there is no software that will emulate a DVD ROM drive…..you will need to get a DVD ROM drive….preferably a cdrw/dvd combo drive as this will give you more functionality, but of course you could go to the latest and get a dvd burner which will not only read all types but burn all types of discs. The cost is anywhere from 10 bucks to 100 depending on model and type you get. if its a laptop drive its going to cost more but functions the same…if its a PC then its easier to install and costs less….there are also external drives that hookup via usb but it would be my guess that if all you have is a standard cdrom drive the computer probably won’t support usb 2.0 and it would be pointless to get an external drive.

      generally, installing a new optical drive isn’t very hard. I haven’t installed any in this particular model, but it can’t be very different. I’ve installed a few in various laptops, it’s not very hard.

      Look, this is a very common misconception, so some people may not be giving you a thorough explanation. Most DVD players can’t play movie files; they can only play DVD-videos. You have to convert your movie files to a DVD-video, not a data DVD. Almost any DVD burning program can do that. If your DVD Burner came with Nero or Roxio, you can go into the make a DVD function and just drag your movie files into the new project. You most likely won’t be able to put two movies on one DVD, unless they are pretty short, or unless you have a dual layer burner and a dual layer DVD.

      Anyway, there are plenty of sites that can show you how to burn a DVD from a movie file. If you have Windows Vista, you can use Windows movie maker also, and I’ve included a link to a tutorial from ehow showing how to do it.

      For the record, newer DVD players and Blu-ray players can play movie files from a USB device like a flash drive, but I don’t think they can play movie files from a data DVD either.

      This my own understanding: Correct me if I am wrong:

      If you are talking about DVD player, that connects to your TV to play DVD movies and DVD ROM that hooks up in your computer to read DVD/CD datas and then they’re little bit different.

      DVD Players (the one that hooks up to your TV) is specifically design to read DVD Files (such as DVD Movies) and most of them can read cd files (music). It depend of what the DVD firmware (the software in the DVD player) can read.

      DVD ROM (that one that hooks up in the computer) Unlike the DVD player, it can read a wide variety of data files. From movies to .exe files etc…. But the problem is, it only reads them. For example, your are going to watch DVD movies on your computer through your DVD ROM, you will need another program in your computer to play it, such as DVD decoder or something that plays dvd files. If you don’t have a dvd decoder, you cannot watch the movies. But it still be able to displays the files in the DVD disk.
      Most games now adays are now on DVD disk, since it won’t fits in a regular CD. And these DVD Game disc are can only be use in computer with the DVD ROM. You will not be able to display the files (.exe etc…) if you insert the disc to your DVD player. It will only say Disc error or something.

      DVD player is design for DVD movies and probably music and pictures. It only reads files that software in dvd player is program to read.
      DVD ROM in the computer can read a wide variety of files but sometimes you will a different program, especially DVD movies to play them to your computer.

      If your bios boot doesn’t give you the choice between the 2 Rom drives then yank the IDE cable out of your CD-Rom and leave the DVD-Rom drive hooked up alone as the master.

      Optical CD/DVD drives aren’t user-repairable. When they fail, they must be replaced.

      Does it work mechanically- i.e does the drive door open when you press the eject button? Does the light come on for awhile when you insert a DVD or CD? Laptop CD/DVD drives usually sit in bays and can be easily popped in & out. You might try releasing it and sliding it back in, it might just be a loose connection.

      There are NOT available YET for your computer. You can buy a DVD Player up converter for your home theater and just use it on your computer. You WILL not see much difference on your tiny little monitor for HD quality anyways.

      If your DVD ROM is broken and you can’t read the games with there, there isn’t any point using FTP as you can’t read the game to FTP with anyway!

      If it’s an Xbox 360, swapping in another DVD ROM isn’t going to help. Each DVD ROM drive has firmware on it for the Xbox 360 it is connected to, for games copyright protection. You’ll need Microsoft to replace the DVD ROM for you, but seeing as you have modded your Xbox this isn’t likely to happen.

      yes, the old dvd drive will work with your xp computer (provided it has a spare IDE connector).

      but you need to check that the jumper setting on the dvd drive matches the existing cd drive.

      the jumper is at the rear of the unit, near the IDE connector. there are three possible settings – master, slave and cable select (usually labelled CS).

      before you fit the dvd drive, check that it has the same jumper setting as the cd drive, or the xp system won’t detect it.

      Huh? A DVD ROM is a disc that you buy from a commercial manufacturer with material already on it. It’s distinguished from DVD-RAM, or DVD±R/RW as Read Only since it can’t be re-recorded. Most people just refer to it as a DVD.

      Now, if you’re looking to connect the audio & video output of a DVD player to a TV that has no audio-video input, just an antenna input, then yes, there are RF modulators availabe at various stores for about to do just that.

    How do I get my DVD-ROM to show up in My Computer?
    My DVD-ROM and CD burner disappeared from appearing in My Computer, and while I HAVE done things such as install a TV-tuner card and whatnot, we’ve never really touched the cables that connected our CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, and CD burner. However, around 6 months ago or so, all that appeared in My Computer was the CD-ROM, and I’m not sure what the problem is. I know ABOUT the whole master-slave deal with the plugs and whatnot, but I don’t know what to do look for to make sure everything’s in check. What I may do is try unplugging the CD-ROM and using that to plug in my DVD-ROM and see if perhaps the cables are shoddy or something, just to see if those same cables work with the rom or not. I’m not sure how to go about troubleshooting this problem, so any tips would be highly appreciated! Thanks =) I’m a technical gal, but please don’t get TOO technical with the terms and whatnot… I don’t want to get confused!

      Try going into setup/bios, check to make sure the settings are correct. Maybe with installation of new hardware your computer performance had to choose between one or the other..

      Option 1: buy an external dvd rom which is connected through usb and detach it when you are not using it.

      Provided that the drives being swapped are both IDE or are both SATA, then the half answers given so far are broadly correct.

      On first boot after installing the new drive, you may need to enter the BIOS (press DEL usually) and save settings with the newly recognised drive.

      If both drives are SATA, then just use the existing power and signal leads – no problem.

      If both drives are IDE, then you will need to ensure that the DVD drive is set the same way as the CD drive: either slave; master or cable select. Link below relates to Western Digital drives – google for whatever make yours is…

      If one drive is SATA and one IDE, then provided the motherboard on your desktop PC has the necessary connector for signal, and your PSU has a suitable power connector free – just pop it in… using the leads from the scrap PC.

    I’m in the process of buying a used Japanese import 2008 Honda Fit and i notice it has a CD player and a DVD ROM player. Can anyone tell me what the DVD ROM player is used for? Is it associated with the navigation system and does it serve any other purpose? Thanks much!

      It’s just for the navigation DVD, it cannot be used to view movies.

    How do I get a computer to correctly recognize my DVD-ROM drive?
    I am working on an eMachines T1855 and for some reason the DVD-ROM drive stopped working. I know, though, that the computer still has access to it because when I right click on its drive and hit “Eject,” the drive ejects. When I put a disk in it, the icon of the drive does not change and when I click on it, it says “Please insert a disk into drive D:” I checked the BIOS to see if that was recognizing it and it had it down correctly as a Samsung DVD drive. Does anyone know what steps I should take to fix this?

      Usually when i run into this, the drive motor (the bit that makes the disc spin) is burnt out, or motor for positioning the read head is jammed/burnt out.

      You may be looking at replacing the drive. Try creating a bootable CD and booting from the CD.. this will allow you to find out if its windows causing the problem or if its the drive.

    How do I remove the CD/DVD ROM from my Dell Inspiron E1505?
    Any idea why my cd/dvd rom may not be working properly? The light doesn’t come on when I push the eject button. There is a cd in the drive now, but the computer isn’t sensing it at all. I think I should remove the drive and reinstall.

      try to remove the CD drive from the system then connect once again while updating its driver from the web.

    How can I add a second DVD ROM drive to my computer?
    I am trying to add a second DVD ROM drive to my computer, but I’m having trouble removing the “block” to the open slot on my computer. There is the plastic part on the outside, but also a metal block on the inside- I can’t remove either! I was able to take the drive out of the old machine and will know how to get it into and hook it up to the new one, so I don’t have any problems with that. I am fairly new at working with hardware, so somewhat “lay” terms would be most helpful in responses. Also, I’m assuming that I can just take the DVD ROM drive from my old system and put it into my new one. They are the same brand and there are extra power supply’s and cables (ribbons, whatever).

    how to check that bios detect the dvd rom?
    my os is damaged, pc dont boot. i’ve tried to install new os but my pc wont boot by dvd. so i tried and tried. but no luck. then my dvd rom is no longer working. the os installer is already inside the dvd rom. now, i cannot open the dvd rom. it seems that the pc is not detecting the drive. what will i do?

      If you have a floppy disk drive, you can sue it to flash the bios with an updated version. If you can boot from a USB, use that option to boot from it and flash the BIOS.

      In order to burn DVDs, you need a DVD-R drive. If you have a CD-R drive, then you can only burn CDs. You also need a CD/DVD Burner software.

    How do I get my dvd rom to get to work again?
    It’s a matshita dvd-rom sr-8587.. my computer is a windows 2000 pro. The drivers are up to date, but in the trouble shooter it said it’s not working properly because windows cannot load the drivers required for this device.     How can I copy a DVD to a disc with just one DVD rom?
    I have a DVD movie I want to copy.
    I have one DVD blank disc.

    How do I do it?

    • ANSWER:
      You’ll need a DVD burner in order to copy a DVD to a disc.

      They’re pretty inexpensive, and you can find one at Fry’s or Amazon for about 30 bucks or so.

      Once you have that installed, then you’ll need a DVD ripper program if it’s a commercial DVD, that can break through the copy-protection.

      You can either use Handbrake if you’re using a Mac (free, but doesn’t handle copy-protected movies on a PC) or Aimersoft – not free, but cheap and works great.

      There’s a comparison of these two programs at the link below.

      Once you’ve ripped (copied) your DVD to your computer, then you can burn the resulting video file back to another DVD, using your new DVD burner.

      You need k-lite codec pack available at http:/www.codecguide.com download the standard version. This allows you to view 95% of the video formats out there, plus it includes a free DVD decoder (what you’re looking for). After installing, I’ve noticed you need to watch the movies with the “Media Player Classic” that comes with the codec pack. It’s usually in c:program filesk-lite codec packmplayer.exe or something similar to that.
