How many times do you get to sympathize with a suicide bomber in movies? Before you can say Manisha Koirala from Dil Se, let me shoosh you by saying that this is intelligent cinema we are talking about here. Intelligence in comedy, or wit, as we call it, is the primary ingredient in a movie that tackles an issue like Jihad or Martyrdom. As a fan of satire and an adversary of shoddy, one-sided American war movies, I kneel before Chris Morris’ Four Lions – a story that holds our hand while helping us walk on the thin layer of ice called terrorism and making us laugh our intestines out even before things start blowing up.

The plot revolves round five British jihadists, four of Pakistani origin and the other a white who converted to Islam, who plan for the ‘final’ jihad, while constantly arguing with each other as to who’s the better soldier of Allah. The plan and its implementation make up the entire movie and the paradise the characters talk about throughout the story is the fact that we, the audience, keep on talking about these guys long after the credits roll.

Imagine a story that combines elements of Ali G, has dialogue at par with the british Office and a plot reminiscent of the jihadists from the BBC animated show Monkey Dust – that’s what Four Lions is. A total laugh riot which uses the humor as a blanket for the love that the audience feels for these gullible, dimwitted suicide bombers.The acting is superb. Riz Ahmed who plays Omar, the main protagonist (or antagonist, depending on your thinking) is the perfect Omar, who on one hand is a violent opponent of the western influenced consumerist culture, and on the other hand is also skeptical about preachy Islamist doctrines. A scene where he tucks his son into bed while narrating him his own version of Lion King called Simba’s Jihad, will impress and disturb you at the same time.

    I am trying to make a backup copy of my dvd and every time I try, I get an error message, which stops the process. I have tried several different programs, but they all do the same thing. I have been able to backup other dvds, but I think it may be Disney dvds that are the problem.

      I can’t find it alone without the song. But it comes without that song in the Lion King Movie Collection. I don’t think they make what you are talking about anymore unless you can get a used copy somewhere.

      Disney have a vaulted system…..it sucks…
      Basically films got put into the vault and pretty much disappear for a long time.
      Means that you might not find a DVD from Disney, when they rerelease it is for a limited time.
      The Lion King….you can probably find it on some web sites like Amazon, Ebay etc.
      It might be hard to find in stores….better of looking in second hand stores, That is where I fond my copy last year.
      Or you can wait til it gets rereleased

      I know Beauty and The Beast and Fantasia are being rereleased this year as Diamond Editions and Blu Rays.
      The Lion King might get released again next year….but you wont know tell next year.

      Yes it is. The Lion King was already released on DVD a long time ago. Disney has just decided to turn a classic into a 3D classic.

      The reason its so hard to find is because Disney only pulls certain Disney movies out of their “Vault” for a month or so every like 10 years. Lion King came out a few years ago so expect it to not come out for like another 5 years or so. And good luck trying to find it for cheap, because they only have it out every so often for a short period of time, they crank the prices up. Maybe try Ebay?

      I would try Ebay if I were you. They are so expensive because of Disney’s “vault.” Every few years, they open it up and put the movies our for sale. Everyone wants them so they can raise the prices. Then they lock them back up and do it again. Disney basically uses supply and demand to make a huge profit.

    How do you access original movie on Lion King Special edition dvd?
    This dvd is supposed to have both versions of the movie but I can only get the special edtion version with The Morning Report to play. How do you access the original version without the added scene?

      On disc one, go to the main menu and choose ‘set up’. ( you may have to watch Zazu going through his spiel). This will give you film / audio options. Choose that, and you’ll be able to pick between the two versions of the film.

    Why isn’t The Lion King on dvd in region 2?
    I’ve often wondered this.

    The Lion King is so hard to come by on dvd in region 2. Is there a reasoning behind this? I don’t even want the blu-ray, though I’m sure that’d be fantastic, why is the DVD so hard to find cheap?

    • ANSWER:
      I don’t know how it works with region 2 discs, but with region 1, after a certain amount of time in stores, the movie is put back “in the vault” and they stop production of it. After a number of years have passed, it’ll be released again. It’s possible that this is the same thing you’ve encountered – the region 1 version has been discontinued since 2005.

      Yes; I hate it. I was so excited when I first received the Lion King DVD, and I didn’t recognize that song. I realized it must have been edited it in, but for God’s sake, “Why?” Some things are just fine left alone. Disney has been going downhill in many ways for a longtime now, and I no longer respect the company.

    Why is The Lion King DVD cheaper in the US than the UK?
    I went into my town center today, and went into EVERY DAMNED store in there that sold DVDs, including the market, searching for the Lion King. The guy in the market told me that I will find it impossible to find, especially cheaply, in the UK as it can fetch up to £40GBP.

    Why is this? I know it’s a “timeless classic”, and is in the Diney Vault, however, why is it cheaper in the US?

    So, I just got home, and brought a Region 1 version for £10 GBP from Ebay, imported from the US (am usually wary of Ebay DVDs)… the guy says there is no hologram though, is this a copy? Because I heard that some DVDs don’t have a hologram.

      Because in the United States the government allows companies like Wal-Mart to pay substandard wages to its employess and also subsidizes thier multi-billion dollar profits with your tax dollars……

      In the UK there is still a belief that people deserve to be paid fairly for thier time and toil, so prices are slightly higher….

      Incomes are also higher tho…….

      The Hologram he is mentioning is probably an insert that Disney often adds to DvD releases…….. its more like a trading card than a necessity……. altho they are collectible and likely have some value on thier own.

      It WAS released on DVD but it is now back in the vault. Disney only releases movies every so often and then puts them away in the ‘vault’ for awhile.

    How do you select the Original Release version of the Lion King on the Platinum Edition DVD?
    I swear, if I have to listen to ‘Morning Report’ one more time, I will shoot myself. I just want to watch as close to the original as I can, and the DVD creators seem to have hidden the Original option, so my question is, WHERE THE HELL DO I SELECT THE ORIGINAL?!

      It’s not really hidden, but the default version is the “special edition”.

      To play the original, go to the Set Up menu and select “Film/Audio Options”. Here they present the audio options grouped by release. There’s “Special Edition” and “Original Theatrical”. Select a sound option from the “Original Theatrical” section and start playing the film.

      Alright, I guess it IS hidden. But it’s all mapped out in the DVD booklet. The option is in the Set Up menu.

      I hate added songs like “The Morning Report” in The Lion King and “Human Again” in Beauty and the Beast. Even Pocahontas has a version with an added song.

      Because Disney animations are timeless. We watched them when we were kids. Our parents watched them when they were kids. And our children (and their children) will watch them too.

    Help with ‘The Lion King’ DVD!!!?
    I recently got ‘The Lion King’ DVD for Christmas. When I try to play the menu, the picture goes very distorted, and I can’t make out anything. With hope, I pressed the ‘Play’ button and it began to play the movie, but again the picture was distorted, and the DVD just stopped itself completly. I thought it would be something to do with the DVD being ‘DTS’, but then I thought it couldn’t be cos it’s the PICTURE that’s bad and not the sound. I then thought it could be something to do with the DVD having ‘THX’, but then again all my other THX DVDs work perfectly.
    The DVD works fine on the computer and the TV downstairs(which has a large plasma screen).
    My TV is a JMB430R and my DVD player is a Durabrand DVD-1005.

      The Lion King 2003 release used early buggy Sony Arcos Protection scheme. You might be running into the effects of sony’s arcos. Since you have a legal copy, make a PC backup to make it compatible with normal DVD VOB format.

      They don’t have DVD’s of Broadway or Off Broadway shows. If anyone out there does, then these are bootlegged copies from patrons with videocameras in the theatre. Only show I know of that was released to the public was “Legally Blonde” on MTV, and know lots of people that recorded it to their DVR’s.

      Anyone caught taping shows on or off Broadway, as well as movies will be put to jail or fined very heavily because it is a Federal offense to do so.

      A lot of disney movies only come out on dvd for a certain window of time. Then they stop making them for a few years and then put them out again. Your best bet would be e-bay or amazon.com as they would have copies from when they were previously released.

    Okay, about that… On the DVD, is there a way to play the non-special edition version of the film, or can it only play the special edition? I saw the special edition version and personally, I hated the “morning report” song… so is there a way to play the regular version on the special edition disk?

    Is simba from the lion king trying to warn me?
    Soooo, i watched the lion king on dvd the other day. awesome movie…., anyway, I had a dream i was nala and simba was trying to tell me i was going to die at a fateful event at toys r us even though i never go to that shop???? Silly simba. Does toys r us have evil toys or something? It looks like a cute shop, but i’m sure simba is over reacting. I saw another girl on here who says her evil bike came to life, is this a pandemic? does toys r us sell bikes?
