Netflix Android

One of the most exciting advantages the Verizon iPhone 4 has over its AT&T counterpart is its ability to become a mobile hot spot. A mobile hot spot allows several devices to connect to it via Wi-Fi and then uses a cellular signal to connect those devices to the Internet. Essentially the hot spot becomes a wireless router.

I was curious about the strain something like this would have on the iPhone 4′s battery, so I decided to run a little test. I turned on the iPhone 4′s hot spot and then connected a Wi-Fi-only iPad to its network. I then streamed a movie through Netflix (“Macbeth”; the Patrick Stewart version, which is surprisingly ambitious, by the way), until the battery on the iPhone 4 died. The movie is only about 2.5 hours, so periodically I’d have to scrub it back toward the beginning.

For comparison, I used the T-Mobile MyTouch 4G, as it was the only hot-spot-capable phone available for testing at the time. I used the same methodology to kill the MyTouch 4G’s battery Dell vostro 1510 batterylife.

To provide context, I’m also including how long each phone’s battery took to die while playing a movie. The movie, “Toy Story 3,” on the iPhone 4 was optimized for iPhone 4, whereas “Toy Story 3″ on the MyTouch 4G was encoded at 720p.

While each phone lasted a bit over 5 hours as hot spots, as video players, things were a little different. The iPhone 4 lasted more than 10 hours, whereas the MyTouch 4G lasted only 6.6 hours. This is an interesting difference that could have to do with the type of videos used by each phone.

I simply felt that each phone should be tested with the best quality video it’s capable of displaying. Each test was run up to three times, with the final results an average of the best two times, as long as they were within 5 percent of each other.

During the video battery test, each phone was placed in airplane mode, with their respective brightnesses adjusted between 140 and 150 candelas per square meters (cd/m2).

While running as hot spots, the phone screens were set to shut off after a minute and were never turned on until after their batteries dell 6400 Laptop batterydied.

We should also note that we noticed a difference in quality between the two phones while streaming “Macbeth.” When using the iPhone 4, the movie looked to display at Netflix’s lowest quality setting. Netflix is known to dial back the visual quality of its streaming signal depending on network traffic or the amount of devices steaming off the network and the speed of your connection.

When streaming using the MyTouch 4G, the image was much clearer. I’ve attempted to illustrate that difference using a couple of pics.

The iPhone 4′s battery is able to put an impressive foot forward if watching movies on the device itself, lasting about 35 percent longer than the MyTouch 4G in video playback battery life.

In hot-spot mode, while the iPhone 4 and MyTouch 4G’s batteries Lenovo 3000 v200 batterylasted about the same duration, the MyTouch 4G will make for a more pleasant experience if streaming movies. The Verizon iPhone 4′s 3G signal just isn’t fast enough (at least in San Francisco) to deliver a consistently high-quality streaming video image. At least not through Netflix.

The Verizon iPhone 4′s hot spot worked as expected, just don’t expect it to deliver a superfast speed.

    • ANSWER:
Your device is not supported. See http://www.netflix.com/NetflixReadyDevicesDetails?pdid=587

You can make it work (I have it running on a Nook Color, which isn’t supported either), but your device will need to be rooted, and you will probably have to change the /system/build.prop file to trick the application into thinking that you have a supported device.

EDIT: Actually listing your unsupported device type and model rather than hoping we’re psychic would help people help you. The Nook Color isn’t a phone either, so what you’re trying to do is possible, but it’s going to require a pretty high technical aptitude.

  26. QUESTION:
    Netflix app on android?
Does the Netflix app for android work on 3G and 4G networks? Or is it strictly WIFI??

    • ANSWER:
First of all the Netflix app works on 3G and 4G and Wi-Fi as well. However you have to be careful with your data internet plan. If you have a limited amount of gigabytes or megabytes that you get per month on your 3G or 4G data plan with your cell phone company, using netflix and streaming will likely use your data internet plan quickly. Plus using 3G data internet will be slow and sometimes lag when watching Netflix.

The best way would be to use Wi-Fi. Using Wi-Fi will give you better results with Netflix. Plus you have unlimited Wi-Fi internet at any hotspot location or through your home network.

  38. QUESTION:
Can i watch netflix on my android ?

    • ANSWER:
nope. I have a droid and recently became aware that this was impossible.

  39. QUESTION:
when is netflix coming to the ANDROID XOOM TABLET?

    • ANSWER:
Official answer from Netflix (and Hulu incidentally) about Android release date is “soon”… They’re requiring Android devices to have built in “DRM” (to prevent you from “pirating the movies” you’re watching).
All new Qualcomm chips are supposed to have the DRM requirements of the studios so they can have Netflix… the LG Revolution was demoed running Netflix at CES and is supposed to launch the end of March or sometime in April.

On Netflix’s site, there’s a comment that makes it sound like all Tegra based Androids will be allowed to have Netflix too: “Netflix is using the Tegra 2 development platform to bring the Netflix experience to Android super phones and tablets. We’re working closely with NVIDIA to ensure Netflix takes full advantage of Tegra’s outstanding acceleration and security capabilities.” — Greg Peters, Vice President, Product Development at Netflix

I’ll also give you a wonderful related comment that I ran across earlier that I echo the sentiment of:
“Neither the iPhone(3|3GS|4) nor iPad(1|2) have hardware encryption. Those platforms have been rooted and exploited time and time again, and thus are not impenetrable platforms. And of course Hulu (Plus) and Netflix run on desktops that have been exploited time and time again.

There are a number of exploits to recover Netflix and Hulu (Plus) streams on a variety of platforms. The hesitancy of those products to go to Android because of the DRM is obnoxious, really, because it goes against all common sense — the horses have long since bolted, so it’s a bit ridiculous to make a big deal about the gate in the corner.”

  41. QUESTION:
What’s the best way to stream Netflix and/or Hulu to my new Android phone?
I have a brand-new Android phone from AT&T (it’s an HTC Inspire), and I love it except for the fact that I haven’t found a cheap/convenient way to access content on my Netflix streaming account from it. They just recently announced that future Androids built on the “Snapdragon” platform will have this capability built-in, but I guess that doesn’t apply to my phone. I have also heard about “PlayOn” and “Plex,” both of which have Android apps now available. But both of them require you to be running their software on your PC, which you then can link to your phone (if it is on the same WiFi network, I guess). I am actually tempted to try out one of these, but I’m unsure which one will be most effective and least expensive for me. If you have any advice on this, or if you know a better way to do what I am trying to do, I’d love to hear from you!

    • ANSWER:
PlayOn has got much better reviews than Plex and although it costs more, it seems to be the better option (as of now) from everything I’ve read. (They do have a 2-week free trial)

One thing worth noting is that you don’t need to be on the same wifi network (it certainly wouldn’t be worth the price if that was the case). It will work over 3G.

  42. QUESTION:
Why cant I put netflix on ubuntu or linux when you can get it on mac android skyfire browser we need some type?
    WTF!!!?????

    • ANSWER:
I do it thru a VM virtual machine running XP, as I would guess most do. Netflix was SUPOSSED to end this crap a couple months ago according to the last official statement, but didn’t…BIG SUPRISE! The reality is this, People who run Linux know what there doing (most of the time). Were able to do a lot of stuff that the Windows people can’t. Netflix know’s that if we get thru DRM we’ll all have extremely large blu-ray collections shortly after :) Which would be a lot harder for the Windows people. Thats what it comes down too. But what REALLY messed up, is those ROKU boxes run Linux!

The Netflix app to stream movies on the Evo Shift 4G from Sprint. I checked the Android Market, and it does not show an official Netflix app, just third party apps.

    • ANSWER:

Can You Use The HDMI Cable On The Droid X To Watch Netflix & YouTube On A HD TV?
Now that there’s a Netflix App on the Android Market for the Droid X, I wanna play Netflix movies on my Droid X on my TV using the HDMI cable but before I buy the HDMI cable I wanna know if you can. So, Can You Use The HDMI Cable On The Droid X To Watch Netflix & YouTube On A HD TV?

    • ANSWER:
      Short answer is yes.

The actual answer is slightly more complicated. In order to get those specific apps to work you need an hdmi mirroring app. There is an app out now for the Droid X called RealHDMI on the android market that is about dollars. It does work and you can watch a Youtube demo here
      (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eA0bkOy-7n4).
      You can find it here
      (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.gmanapps.realhdmi&feature=related_apps)

There is another app you can try, some users have had luck with it.It is called Xternal display, and can also be found on the market. The best part is you get it for free… here.

  50. QUESTION:
How do I get Netflix on my Nook Color?
    Please help me,
I really want to get netflix on my Nook Color but it is not Android powered.
At least I dont think it is.
Is there any way I can get it?
    Thankyou in advance,
    D

    • ANSWER:
I recommend this site www.Nook2Android.com. They have 3 different sizes of SD cards, 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB, so you can get what is right for you. Plus they already have many of the most popular apps and games installed and ready for you to use, such as Angry Birds, Words With Friends, and Netflix. (Netflix requires its own hack to make it work)

Check out their site and their facebook page, and you will see that they also have amazing and quick customer service! I highly recommend them!

Also worth noting, doing this does not void your warranty or change the Nook, you take the card out and it is back to the way it was!! Basically while you have the micro SD card in, you have a 0 Android Tablet, fully functional!

      Good luck!
