One of the most exciting advantages the Verizon iPhone 4 has over its AT&T counterpart is its ability to become a mobile hot spot. A mobile hot spot allows several devices to connect to it via Wi-Fi and then uses a cellular signal to connect those devices to the Internet. Essentially the hot spot becomes a wireless router.
I was curious about the strain something like this would have on the iPhone 4′s battery, so I decided to run a little test. I turned on the iPhone 4′s hot spot and then connected a Wi-Fi-only iPad to its network. I then streamed a movie through Netflix (“Macbeth”; the Patrick Stewart version, which is surprisingly ambitious, by the way), until the battery on the iPhone 4 died. The movie is only about 2.5 hours, so periodically I’d have to scrub it back toward the beginning.
For comparison, I used the T-Mobile MyTouch 4G, as it was the only hot-spot-capable phone available for testing at the time. I used the same methodology to kill the MyTouch 4G’s battery Dell vostro 1510 batterylife.
To provide context, I’m also including how long each phone’s battery took to die while playing a movie. The movie, “Toy Story 3,” on the iPhone 4 was optimized for iPhone 4, whereas “Toy Story 3″ on the MyTouch 4G was encoded at 720p.
While each phone lasted a bit over 5 hours as hot spots, as video players, things were a little different. The iPhone 4 lasted more than 10 hours, whereas the MyTouch 4G lasted only 6.6 hours. This is an interesting difference that could have to do with the type of videos used by each phone.
I simply felt that each phone should be tested with the best quality video it’s capable of displaying. Each test was run up to three times, with the final results an average of the best two times, as long as they were within 5 percent of each other.
During the video battery test, each phone was placed in airplane mode, with their respective brightnesses adjusted between 140 and 150 candelas per square meters (cd/m2).
While running as hot spots, the phone screens were set to shut off after a minute and were never turned on until after their batteries dell 6400 Laptop batterydied.
We should also note that we noticed a difference in quality between the two phones while streaming “Macbeth.” When using the iPhone 4, the movie looked to display at Netflix’s lowest quality setting. Netflix is known to dial back the visual quality of its streaming signal depending on network traffic or the amount of devices steaming off the network and the speed of your connection.
When streaming using the MyTouch 4G, the image was much clearer. I’ve attempted to illustrate that difference using a couple of pics.
The iPhone 4′s battery is able to put an impressive foot forward if watching movies on the device itself, lasting about 35 percent longer than the MyTouch 4G in video playback battery life.
In hot-spot mode, while the iPhone 4 and MyTouch 4G’s batteries Lenovo 3000 v200 batterylasted about the same duration, the MyTouch 4G will make for a more pleasant experience if streaming movies. The Verizon iPhone 4′s 3G signal just isn’t fast enough (at least in San Francisco) to deliver a consistently high-quality streaming video image. At least not through Netflix.
The Verizon iPhone 4′s hot spot worked as expected, just don’t expect it to deliver a superfast speed.

QUESTION:
Slingbox Solo + TiVo Premiere + Netflix + Android 2.1 phone = Netflix anywhere?
Has anybody done this? My question assumes sufficient bandwidth on both ends and a Netflix subscription. I’ve seen many posts from people who have used it with various DVRs but nobody who has done this. Also, must the user leave his or her computer at home for Slingbox to work?
Thank you,
Matt
-
ANSWER:
in theory it should work.and no you dont need any viewing device at home by your statement i guess you talking about a lap-top leaving it at home so no you just need the slingbox connected to the internet the output on the slingbox is a pass-thru port since you dont control the channels with it for your tv and your slingbox needs to be after your tivo so you can control the tivo with the IR leads- i dont have a tivo i have a computer based pvr and i dont have a android phone

QUESTION:
Netflix app on android?
Does the Netflix app for android work on 3G and 4G networks? Or is it strictly WIFI??-
ANSWER:
First of all the Netflix app works on 3G and 4G and Wi-Fi as well. However you have to be careful with your data internet plan. If you have a limited amount of gigabytes or megabytes that you get per month on your 3G or 4G data plan with your cell phone company, using netflix and streaming will likely use your data internet plan quickly. Plus using 3G data internet will be slow and sometimes lag when watching Netflix. The best way would be to use Wi-Fi. Using Wi-Fi will give you better results with Netflix. Plus you have unlimited Wi-Fi internet at any hotspot location or through your home network.

QUESTION:
What’s the best way to stream Netflix and/or Hulu to my new Android phone?
I have a brand-new Android phone from AT&T (it’s an HTC Inspire), and I love it except for the fact that I haven’t found a cheap/convenient way to access content on my Netflix streaming account from it. They just recently announced that future Androids built on the “Snapdragon” platform will have this capability built-in, but I guess that doesn’t apply to my phone. I have also heard about “PlayOn” and “Plex,” both of which have Android apps now available. But both of them require you to be running their software on your PC, which you then can link to your phone (if it is on the same WiFi network, I guess). I am actually tempted to try out one of these, but I’m unsure which one will be most effective and least expensive for me. If you have any advice on this, or if you know a better way to do what I am trying to do, I’d love to hear from you!-
ANSWER:
PlayOn has got much better reviews than Plex and although it costs more, it seems to be the better option (as of now) from everything I’ve read. (They do have a 2-week free trial)One thing worth noting is that you don’t need to be on the same wifi network (it certainly wouldn’t be worth the price if that was the case). It will work over 3G.

QUESTION:
Where can I download the Netflix app to stream movies for Sprint HTC EVO Shift 4G phone?
The Netflix app to stream movies on the Evo Shift 4G from Sprint. I checked the Android Market, and it does not show an official Netflix app, just third party apps.-
ANSWER:
It looks as if the App works for the HTC-Evo only and not the Evo-Shift. Rumors are that they are working on it for the shift. It does beg the question as to why the evo and not the shift, but there are quite a few out there who are expecting it soon.

Well if you want to play facebook games, then you probably shouldn’t get a tablet, because i dont think tablets support online games. Also, the iPad doesnt support FLASH, which means it doesnt support the chat for iPad. If you are going to be using the tablet for facebook, then i would defiantly recommend a Android tablet.

QUESTION:
Is there a program or App for the Android Smartphone that allows you to read an eBook on it?
I do not have an Android. I was considering getting a iphone for myself as a college graduation gift, but most of my technosavvyy friends have urged me to consider an Android instead. If I can watch Netflix on my phone, I’m good.
What would be even better is to be able to read some books on my phone, too. Is there any way I could read an eBook, or just view some .pdf books on the android? It seems like Amazon.com’s Kindle has a way to read its books on some Smartphone.
I’m really not Smartphone savvy, yet. My current cell phone is an obsolete piece of junk that was out of date when I got it 5 or 6 years ago. My knowledge and experience with the more contemporary phones is fairly limited, and will probably continue to be until I get one of my own.-
ANSWER:
I have an Android and there are tons of apps besides amazon kindle to read ebooks and many are free apps. Purchasing the books aren’t lol. Although there are free books that the app offers. Get an Android. You’ll thank me later

QUESTION:
Is the iPad 2 for me or the Motorola Xoom?
i want a tablet for great apps, streaming videos through xfinity and netflix, and music.i have an android phone so i know what to expect from android. but the apps are limited, no netflix.
-
ANSWER:
Remember that Android 3.0 on the Xoom is still in its early stages…there is going to be a number of updates available to it…and there will be an increase in the amount of Apps available…Yes, the Ipad has a HUGE amount of Apps, but the android app catalog is growing and growing…very soon the apps you desire will be on the Xoom. As for NOW the Ipad 2 is the better choice, but remember there is alot of things an Ipad 2 CAN’T do! There is also alot of limitations and major disadvantages…like:iTunes required for uploading content
No Flash support in the web browser
Poor still cameras
No standard USB port
Non replaceable battery
No stereo loudspeakers
No GPS receiver for the Wi-Fi only version
No memory card slot
3G model uses micro-SIM, instead of a regular size SIM
iPhone apps designed for HVGA resolution squander screen real estate or look pretty bad unscaled
….and much more…..I would go for the Xoom(It has so much potential), and since you have an android smartphone, you will feel right at home with ! make sure you check out professional reviews of each one before choosing

What can you tell me about this website?
I just got a HTC Evo. I was sad to learn that I couldn’t access my netflix account to stream. But I ran into this website called “bitbop”. You pay 9.99 a month and you can stream and download tv shows on your Android phone. Anyone know anything about it? Or a substitution for netflix on an droid?-

Google for “bitbop reviews.”For example here’s one:

QUESTION:
Get Verizon iphone now or wait for iphone 5 or go android?
Ok so I can get any Verizon smartphone right now since I’m eligible for the upgrade and need to decide what to do. I could wait for the next iphone, but I don’t have a smartphone now and don’t want to go 4-5 months without one. I have an ipod touch 4g and I like it but I want to have the internet away from home. What hurts is that 4g will be coming to Verizon soon and I don’t want to be stuck with 3g if it really is significantly worse. The Verizon iphone won’t support 4g, right? I like the customization with android but I like the idea of having all my entertainment and already bought apps with me, as well as Netflix. So what do you think?-
ANSWER:
Honestly, i would get the iphone now, don’t wait. The iPhone 5 will likely not have LTE, and no one knows if the Verizon iPhone will actually come out in the summer. You could end up iPhone-less if you wait. I personally am buying the iPhone now. I own a Droid, and i am very pleased with it, but it had its difficulties at times. The Android Market is NOWHERE near the Apple App Store. Solitaire is in the top 5 games on the Android Market, which on my opinion it is sad.So, unless you are really hyped on a certain android phone i say iPhone 4.

QUESTION:
send video from one PC over network to another in same home?
Heres my problem. I have two computers in my room. one is my Toshiba Laptop, very nice, but does NOT play games. no videocard. however, it is connected to my 27″ CRT TV over an S-video cable (my laptop supports S-video output)i use this to watch netflix, i can control netflix with an app on my android phone. this setup works well.
now in the other corner of my room, I have a nice quad core desktop built for gaming. its a fairly high end machine, with a 1080p monitor attached. The computer itself does HDMI and dual DVI output.
both computers are running Windows 7 ultimate and are in the same homegroup for easy file transfer.
I love to game on the desktop, but I happen to have some emulated titles and older games that would actually look better on the CRT believe it or not. And i have them set up with my controller and everything.
I am looking for some kind of software that I can install on both machines that will allow me to output the display of the desktop, TO the laptop, which will be in projector mode, outputting to the tv.
both laptops are in the same room as the router and there is no more than 8 feet of ethernet cable between them. I plan to output the video from the desktop in SD (640×480) to be easy on the bandwidth and becuase any more wouldnt be useful on a CRT screen.
so is there anything that can help me? im looking for a software solution NOT a hardware solution. becuase Im only using the CRT until I move my Sony Bravia into the room, in which case I will just use the HDMI output from the desktop and wont need this workaround.
Ive tried to be as thorough in my question so you know exactly what I’m trying to accomplish to get the best answers
i know im a “new member” but ive been part of the answers community for years, this is just a new yahoo account for me.

QUESTION:
Should I get the HTC Inspire or wait a couple months?
I currently have an Iphone 3G and my AT&T contract is up and Im eligible for an upgrade. My friends have touted their Iphones (3GS) having Netflix streaming (and Im jealous), but Ive read that both Netflix and Hulu are not (yet) available on Android phones. I like the tech specs of the HTC Inspire – great 8mp camera and 720p HD video, has the new snapdragon processor, nice big screen for streaming video – but can you stream video to it? Not like youtube, I mean TV shows and movies? Ive heard of Playon but Im not paying an extra – a month, Im looking for a free or one-time fee app. Ive read a company statement that FUTURE Android phones with snapdragon will soon come Netflix ready, but what about current snapdragon phones? Update? So should I pull the trigger on this phone? Or should I wait a little while, is something else going to come out soon? Like I said I REALLY like the specs for this phone but I really want to be able to stream video too. Is there a workaround for this?
Im open to suggestions, no recommendations to switch carriers please

thanks for quick reply erin – I forgot to mention that AT&T apparently locks their android phones so you can install 3rd party apps, so its not really as ‘open’ as it would be on Verizon etc. At least thats my understanding… is there something in the Google Market or Android Market etc that I could use?
*CANT install 3rd party apps*-
ANSWER:
I’m running a bootlegged copy of both Netflix and Hulu on my Android. There is so much more you can do with opensource phones than you can with an Iphone. I don’t pay a + for every app either. Iphone’s have inferior hardware compared to Android phones. I’d be shocked to see anyone buy an Iphone who’s actually done their homework in comparing smartphones.Since the Inspire is an Android phone, there is nothing stopping you from doing whatever you want to it. You simply can’t do the same things with an Iphone.

QUESTION:
Should I get an iPod Touch or iPod Classic?
I have a very buggy 30gb Zune and I’m trying to save up money for a new MP3 player. The main reason I want an iPod is because they are more compatible with docking stations (including ones in the car- and I do plan on getting a car with iPod integration).I have a lot of music on my Zune, so an iPod Nano or Shuffle don’t have enough storage space. I love the idea of watching videos on my MP3 player (short clips while walking on the treadmill). However, I rarely use my MP3 players in a wi-fi enabled area, and I have an Android smartphone.
My smartphone, however, doesn’t have Netflix and some of the apps available for Apple.
I pretty much just use my Zune to listen to music, books, or podcasts while relaxing, driving, or working out.
-
ANSWER:
Look at a program called PlayOn, it allows you to watch Netflix on any android device. It also works with Hulu, live sports, and lots of other stuff. I have it and love it, I use it on my Droid 2 smartphone and my Samsung Galaxy Tab. That way you can have lots of options to watch and not have to spend a million dollars on an apple product, which IMO are inferior to the android OS anyway.

And no, I don’t want the HTC Thunderbolt, android is absolute @#$@ I can’t stand android it’s a junk OS–seriously, I don’t need to baby a phone that comes preloaded with bloatware and rooting it to get rid of all that @#@# is not worth it.So yeah, as I was saying (devious smile), is LTE really worth it, like is 3G EV-DO rev A sufficient, even for using like netflix over the air lets say (Because that’s the highest bandwidth app I’d probably ever use)?

ANSWER:
Let me start off by saying that I am yearning for a WP7 phone (and I would like it to be on Verizon). However, I’m going to be pretty frank with my answer. The HTC Trophy has pretty mediocre specs. There is not a single thing about it that makes it stand out in a crowd. Because I live in such a rural area, LTE is not even that big of a deal for me. The phone, itself, is what is going to keep me from purchasing a Verizon WP7 phone. Also, I am sure that the Trophy will come with some bloatware (albeit, not as much as an Android phone), since both Verizon and HTC will be able to (and believe me, they will) put programs onto it. I would suggest either sticking it out for the next round of WP7 phones or switching carriers. The HD7S is looks pretty nice for AT&T.

QUESTION:
Non-computers slowing down home wifi?
Whenever I try to watch youtube, netflix, or any other internet videos on anything in the house connected to our home wifi except my laptop, internet for any other device slows down to the point of being unusable. Preforming a download on my laptop causes the same phenomenon. Basic tasks like loading a web page or recieving email do not cause this. If the phones are put on 3g instead of wifi, the network slows down immediately regardless of wether they are doing anything or not. The non-computer devices we are using are the PS3, Wii, 3DS, one generic texting phone, one blackberry phone, and one android phone. Our wireless is a basic wireless N router. Our internet is 12 MBps through Comcast. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?-
ANSWER:
it is a router setting. your router is prioritizing traffic (QoS) and see that intense downloads are more important than the other devices. Adjust your (Qos) settings. If it isnt that then it is radio interference and try switching to a different channel or operating at a different frequency. Neighbors or even wireless phones can interfere.

QUESTION:
Blade Runner and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep…?
Hey everyone,I just got Netflix recently and to my surprise they have Blade Runner up for instant streaming. I’ve wanted to watch this film for some time. I’ve read that it “loosely based” on a novel called ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep’. I’ve been wanting to read this novel as well….
If the film is supposed to be based on the book and is very similar to it, I would like to read the book first because, generally speaking, books are almost always better than their movie adaptations. But if they are quite different and watching the movie won’t ruin the book for me, I would like to go ahead and watch the movie.
Does anyone have any info about this to help me out? Thanks in advance.

ANSWER:
The movie is very loosely based on the book. It is so loose that the stories are completely different. They both feature androids. There are ample differences in both that watching or reading first shouldn’t matter.Saw the movie years ago (at the theaters in 1982, so I admit my memory could be faulty) and read the book about 2 months ago.
EDIT: Just read a synopsis of the film on Wikipedia and I still think there’s adequate differences to make both reading and watching enjoyable, regardless of which you do first.
