2. QUESTION:
   How does Netflix stream HD and not have the vertical bars above and below the picture?
   Does anyone know how Netflix is able to stream HD onto an HD t.v. and there is no vertical bars – the movie fills the entire screen perfectly while a dvd/blu ray has the bars above and below the picture?

   Maybe I am missing something about my t.v. – is there a way to make the picture fit the screen the way Netflix has done.

   PS. that is one thing I found great about Netflix!

     It depends on what you are watching.

     TV shows (especially newer ones) should fill the whole screen.
     Movies shouldn’t.

     There are 3 main aspect ratios.

     4:3 – your old tube TV.
     16:9 – Your new wide screen TV
     Movie – (there are a few of these but these are) wider then wide screen.

     If the movies on netflix are filling the screen, they’ve been some what cropped. This is “okay” but your losing part of the image. You can imagine that the image should stick out from your screen several inches on each side.

   Why am I not getting HD netflix very often?
   I have Netflix on my xBox 360, and I am using a wireless N adapter. My ISP is Cox Communications and I have 25mpbs. When I watch shows that support HD only about 50% of the time it streams in HD. Netflix will go in and out of HD during every episode. My cousin has an xBox 360 with an N adapter as well, and he gets HD Netflix about 90% of the time. We live together so we are using the same ISP and everything. Why is it doing that?

   • ANSWER:
     Getting a HD signal from Netflix is dependent on a few things.

     First, is the show in question even available in HD? If not, then nothing you do will get an HD signal.

     Second, what is your sustained download speed? You may have a 25mbps connection but that’s your theoretical maximum speed. When Netflix starts streaming a show, it does a speed test to determine what quality of video to use. If your connection isn’t fast enough you won’t get the HD signal. Lots of things can affect your download speed. Maybe you’ve got another download running in the house – like having your 360 download this week’s demos for instance. Another factor is that with a cable modem, your connection is shared with everyone else in your neighborhood/area. So if you’re trying to stream a video during “prime time” for internet usage, it could be you just aren’t getting enough bandwidth for Netflix to use a HD stream.

     A third factor is your connection between your 360 and your router. A weak wireless signal may cause a drop in overall speed. You can sometimes correct these issues by trying to relocate the router so it’s closer to the 360, or point its antennas in that direction. Placing the router up high – like on a book shelf – will also help with overall signal range and signal strength. Again, the 108mbps provided by a Wifi N adapter represents the theoretical maximum speed. Things like distance, floors/walls, and even other Wifi networks can interfere with the signal, reducing its range, strength, and therefore, speed.

   Anyway to make Netflix stream in HD if I wait to hit play?
   Is there anyway to prestream a Netflix movie in HD? I realize Netflix has HD streaming but I don’t have the connecting to do midstream.

   For instance, I want to start up the movie and can back in a hour on a bad connection to have it in HD and then hit start.

     You can’t do that.
     Netflix does not allow you to store the movie.

   How to get Netflix in HD for Xbox?
   I just downloaded Netflix on my xbox and i want to watch all the instant movies and shows available but the quality is terrible…it says that its checking the quality but i play games in 1080P but the videos appear to be playing in standard definition. Is there anything i can do to fix this?

     Quality depends on your broadband speed.

     You need more than 3 Mbit/s to watch in HD. (Cable modem)
     Basic DSL is not going to cut it.

    I try to stream HD netflix to my macbook pro but it says my bandwidth is not enough?
    Is there anyway I can increase my bandwidth? I have verizon fios.

      Netflix has to run at least 2mbps download speed. Make sure that other computers are not on when you try to view Netflix. Check you speed here and if it’s below 2mbps, call verizon to upgrade your speed.

    If I use my HD PVR to capture Netflix from my Xbox, is it copyright infringement?

      Depends on what this footage is of. If its your teacher taking a shower, then she doesn’t hold copyright on that, YOU own the camera and therefore, YOU hold the copyright. Happy jerking!

      are you wireless? the connection to ur router could slow the image. sometimes i can watch in fairly good quality and others in terrible, it just depends on how ur connection is.

      Example: youtube videos- when u click on hd, it takes longer to load but it isn’t “real” hd….just higher quality

      Right now it is barely DVD quality (if you have a VERY good broadband line)

      Probably the cheapest.

      There are quite a few BD players that support Netflix as well – so for a bit more you get a BD player as well. – check the netflix web site for supporte dproducts.

    With the Xbox 360 can you download HD movies from Netflix?
    I have the HD DVD player. I was mad to see that it is now obsolete and therefore I cancelled my Netflix because I could no longer watch HD movies without a Blueray player. However, now that Netflix allows Netflix members to streamline movies using their 360 can I download HD movies?
    Will new movies be released to download in HD or is it just the movies that were available prior to HD going obselete?

      You can, but the HD list of movies is much smaller than the non-HD selection. In fact, it’s small enough for me to just go through and count them..

      5 pages of 24 titles, and 1 more page of 22 titles. so..
      5*24+22= 142 HD titles.

      At first glance, I think I only recognize maybe 20% of them. A vast majority are what look to be independent films and documentaries. Of the 20%, 15% are TV series such as CSI, Heroes, and disney animated series such as kim possible.

      As for watching the HD, Netflix says the following.

      “Certain titles are available to watch in HD on your Xbox 360. In order to watch in HD you need:

      * An HD TV and component or HDMI connection from your Netflix ready device to your TV
      * A high-speed internet connection at time of playback (typically 5 Mbps or higher)”

      Could always make a free trial to check it out. You likely could watch them all in the free 2 weeks.

      Well the deal with streaming is it is completely dependent on your connection speed. If you have a great connection then many shows are in hd, if your connection slows then it will change to a standard definition almost seamlessly.

    Is my wireless fast enough for streaming HD movies via netflix?
    Speedtest.net shows my wireless laptop at 7.72 Mbps download and 5.55 Mbps upload. I’m using Comcast internet. If I were to get a wireless WIFI blueray player which would be able to stream Netflix movies would this be fast enough to watch HD movies without a lot of slow internet troubles?

      You need to make sure that both your Wireless router and the BluRay player are 802.11N Standard. 802.11G will not be good enough to effectively stream HD.

    Most of the time it will freeze and drop most frames. 720p movies play fine on computer.Could it be hardware related? Running a gateway nv52, amd 64 x2 at 2.1, 4gb ram, radeon hd3200 video chip set.

      well, it could be your internet connection that’s slow – I ‘m staying somewhere temporarily and can’t watch anything on netflix because of poor connection.

      Netflix HD streaming depends on your connection speed. Using HD cables won’t make it stream in HD.

    I want to know how to force Netflix to stream in 1080p on the Playstation 3 or 720p I don’t mind it buffering for a while. I have a WiFi connection also.

      I dont think you can. I think it automatically detects connection speed and picks the correct quality.

      If you press select as soon as the video is playing youll see it says “low/SD” and will increase to “X-high/HD” if your connection is high enough, and the video is HD. Some vids on there are only SD.

      We were just discussing that in the dvr/tivo section. I don’t see it on the web site but when you launch Netflix and your queue comes up, it’s listed on the bottom left next to the ratings. I’m assuming that nothing listed is SD.

      Short answer is yes.

      The actual answer is slightly more complicated. In order to get those specific apps to work you need an hdmi mirroring app. There is an app out now for the Droid X called RealHDMI on the android market that is about dollars. It does work and you can watch a Youtube demo here

    Can I use Blu-Ray with regular tv/ not hd? Also, does the Netflix use Ethernet or wireless?
    First off, we are upgrading to a HD TV in the Spring, however, will the Blu-Ray work with our regular tv now and DVDs?

    Also, the ones that say are Netflix ready, is this built into the player? Does it use a wireless signal or Ethernet cord?

      The answer to both those questions depend on the Blue-ray player. All Blue-rays are downward compatible with DVD and CD discs. Meaning that they will play them. You will have to check the specific Blue-ray player for SD-TV compatibility.

      Netflix uses an internet connection. It doesn’t care if it is wired or wireless. Again, it depends on what is built into the Blue-ray player.

      As of today Netflix HD movies are in 720p but I’m sure in the near future 1080 will be available. The quality of Netflix will really not differ between Apple TV and Roku so I would just look at the other service and features of each that you may want to use now or in the future.

      According to Netflix the minimum bandwidth requirement is 1.5Mbps. Netflix recommends for watching movies instantly a 3.0Mbps connection. Check with your internet service provider to confirm that these download speeds.

      I would get at least a 3Mbps yet many like a 5 to be sure as they dont like the laggies.

    Are all HD dvds from netflix widescreen?
    I have netflix, a Toshiba A30 HD dvd player and a 1080i TV.
    All the HD DVDs from Netflix show up as wide screen on my 50″ TV. ie there 2 dark bands at the top and at the bottom. The picture does not use all of the screen.
    Is this normal or did I configure it wrong?

      for true hd they will have try adjusting you video picture to wide zoom and that should take care of the format issue

      Netflix DOES stream HD, but only on certain movies/shows (from what i can tell). I have streamed COUNTLESS movies and shows and only a few have streamed in HD. For example, i watched every season of Heroes and Weeds and every episode streamed in HD, but when I watch B movies or “off brand” kind of movies, they generally don’t stream in HD. I too have 12 Mbps, but like i said – i think it depends on what you’re watching. Try and stream a few episodes of Heroes and see if it streams in HD.

      Also, i don’t know of this matters or not, but I am plugged in with an ethernet cable to my router, not wirelessly.

    I am about to buy a Vizio TV with built in wifi and internet apps. It’s an LCD HDTV. So, if I stream or download a TV from the Netflix account, does it come in HD? Or is it just standard definition?

    I recently bought an HD tv, and a Roku box to watch movies instantly through Netflix. The Roku box gets a wireless internet signal.

    It’s currently hooked up using the normal red/yellow/white cables. Will I get better quality hooking it up using the HDMI or green/blue/red cables? Is it worth it to hook it up using either?

      The Roku can do HD as long as the content is HD and your internet connection is powerful enough to stream it. You’ll need about 10mps to stream HD without buffering problems.

      All three of the existing models will do 780p HD. The XD and XD|S will do 1080p HD.

      All of the content at Netflix isn’t HD, in fact, some is really old SD. Also know that all of the video available by mail isn’t available to stream – just the material in the instant watch catalog.

      There’s a lot more that a Roku box will get besides Netflix too. There’s tons of content out there and the list is growing daily. It will also stream from your PC (as long as you’re tech enough to setup a media server on your PC) and will run mp4 and .mkv from the USB port.

      netflix requires a hard drive as it uses it to buffer the video or store to it. Because the arcade has only limited memory you would need to upgrade to a hdd. you would need an hdmi cable for it as well for the tv but the arcade does have that port so purchase an HDD and cable and you are golden or basically have a pro setup.
