Maybe you recently made the decision to become a work-at-home mom. Or, perhaps you are contemplating your options. Sometimes it’s scary to take that huge step of quitting your part or full-time job to start a business from home. Often, the reason for your feelings of ambivalence is financial. You wonder: Will I be able to earn enough money as a work-at-home mom?

Here are 9 nifty and thrifty ways you can cut costs everyday.

1. GROCERIES. Clip coupons. Challenge yourself each week to see how much you can save. Another way to save on groceries is to buy generic brands. Personally, there are some brand name items I have to buy (like Pop-Tarts!) but other things, like jelly, cheese, and paper towels work as well and taste just as good as the higher priced brands.

2. CHILD-CARE. If you have friends with kids, why not swap babysitting so you can save on sitter costs?

3. CLOTHING. Shop consignment! Why go to the mall when you can get like-new brand-named clothing for a fraction of the cost? Who will ever know the difference? Also sell your kids clothes and use the money you earn (usually 40% of the selling price) to purchase other items.

4. BEAUTY. Check out your local beauty schools and training centers where hair cuts, manicures, and other services are offered for significantly less than you pay in a salon. Better yet, particularly if you have boys who have short hair, learn to cut it yourself! 5. EATING OUT. Since lunch is generally less expensive than dinner, consider dining out before 4:00 PM, when lunch menus are still available. Also, many websites offer online coupons. Another tip: choose to dine out during the week when restaurants often run weekday specials.

6. DRIVING. If you’re able to walk or ride your bike, do it. Besides saving on gas money, you’ll be getting fit, allowing you to also cancel that gym membership!

7. ENTERTAINMENT. Instead of renting two movies at your local video store every week, look into a movie club, like www.Netflix.com or www.blockbuster.com where you can rent the same number of movies for less money. Also, many movie theaters offer matinee discounts or other various specials.

8. MAINTENANCE. So some things you absolutely need to have done by a professional. But, whenever possible, do it yourself! Washing your own car and mowing your own lawn can save you bundles over the course of a year.

9. EVERYTHING. Comparison shop! Whether on eBay, local store ads, or online, find the cheapest price before going out to buy the item or obtain a service you’re looking for.

      They can tell a fake number because they quickly run it to make sure its valid. Ask your parents or another adult about using their card. If you decide not to go past the trial they will not charge you, just as long as you cancel.

      After you get to the locator site, it asks for your last name and credit card number.

      Then you go to a site where you can change your password. That site does not need to be “secure.”

      You must put in a Credit Card number before you get the free trial. Trust me, I tried. They probably did this because they wanted to suck you into the movies and such.

    My html page will have a list of icons and a mouseover on an icon will display a popup window with partial text from a mysql database. On clicking the icon, a new page will open with full text and an ajax star rating system. I need the same exact effect as they have on the netflix website where you mouseover the picture of a dvd and the popup window displays info about that movie from a backend dbase.       I do not know of a singular, free package that accomplishes both of these (the tooltip and the AJAX javascript/php glue) but it’s possible to accomplish this with a free tooltip package, with no AJAX glue required.

      The tooltip library on walterzorn.com (see the link below) allows passing HTML to the tooltip and offers a good set of customization options. The HTML is passed via “onmouseover” so you can have your PHP script put together the HTML (I wrote a function that does the mysql heavy lifting to generate the HTML based on the item ID). I found Walter’s tooltip package the easiest (and it’s free) and I was able to put together a nifty Netflix-style system in about an hour. Mousing over my items displays a custom pop-up, and clicking on the item sends the user to an info page.

      Just to end all of the myths that are apparently out there regarding blockbuster online…

      More Movies: Netflix has around 59,000, while BO has around 56,000. Whether it’s TV shows, old movies, or obscure documentaries, both services have them. The way that netflix is able to bolster their numbers is through the foreign film market where they get the “B” movies from India’s Bollywood. One report noted that they still have 7,000 titles that have been rented fewer than 5 times TOTAL across the country, while BO has 1,200 such titles.

      Throttling: Netflix does it and is currently in litigation over it. BO doesn’t. Throttling is taking those customers who rent less and sending their movies out ahead of those who rent more. This works two-fold: they can make more profit off those who rent a lot by limiting the postage they have to spend on them, while those who rent less won’t realize that they aren’t getting their money’s worth because they get their movies quicker.

      Costs: Both charge the same prices. Both have a free month offer. The only difference is the free in-store rental coupon that BO sends out every week. This coupon can be used on the hottest titles, which both Netflix and BO have trouble getting out to everyone in a timely manner.

      First, put the Netflix streaming disk in the Wii. It will tell you to input code at netflix. Login to Netflix on any computer and click on the top right where it says “Your Account & Help”. Then scroll down to where it has an underlined “WATCHING INSTANTLY ON YOUR TV OR COMPUTER”. Click on “Activate a Netflix Ready Device”, then input the code that the Wii shows up on the screen. Your Wii will instantly be able to play Netflix.

      Hi, although I wish PS3 would I don’t think they will since they do the rental movies in the playstation store however there is another way that you can watch movies on the PS3 from netflix and other sites as well you just have to download PlayOn http://www.themediamall.com/playon it does cost but is fairly cheap in my opinion 39.95 but they do have a free trial of 14 days so that you can test it out and it works on other sites besides netflix to watch videos so even if the PS3 doesn’t start this is the best bet that I have found

      I love Netflix. Love it. With all but the absolute bottom-line cheap subscription choices, you get unlimited streamed viewing of movies and TV shows right over your computer. They have numerous choices for subscriptions (1 at a time, 2 at a time … 8 at a time?) and you can keep as long as you like, no late charges. There are thousands of reviews so you can see whether or not you might like to rent something. They also have a trial period so you can check it out to see if it’s something you will want, before you commit.

      I get my movies in 2 days, and when I return them, Netflix gets them in about 2 days. That’s the norm, rarely does it take longer. I have had one single episode of the wrong disc being sent, and 2 episodes of a cracked or unplayable disc, and that’s in over 2 *years* of subscribing. Their customer service was quick and helpful, and replaced the discs immediately. They have a very efficient help service.

      Perhaps others have not had as good of luck as I have, but my experience with them has been overwhelmingly positive.

      Just go to your netflix account (make sure your signed in) click on the tab that says “Instantly to your tv” Then scroll down until you see the xbox 360 and click on “Find out More” That will get you set up. I run my netflix in 3 different rooms off of my blu-ray player in one, nintendo wii in the other, and 360 in my boys room. As well as having it on my computer of course. Easy to set up, don’t sweat it !!!

      For the .99/month plan you can have one movie at a time, but can only get 2 movies a month. You also get 2 hours of instant viewing per month. Which means you will only get to see 3 movies total each month (2 by DVD and 1 instantly.)

      The other plans all include unlimited instant movie viewing and have varying amounts of DVDs you can have at one time.

      I am on the 4 movies at a time plan, which means for .99/month I can have any 4 movies out at one time. When I send one back, they send me the next one on my list. You can put anything that netflix carries on DVD on your list and control the order in which you receive them.

      For the online Instant viewing, not all movies are available. It is mostly just older movies, however the quality is good and the lag is very minimal. You can also send movies to your Xbox 360, HD TiVo, and some select Blu Ray players.

      What probably happened is the last person who logged in netflix.com from your computer selected “Remember password / login / etc…” when accessing the netflix site. So, if you can’t find the logout option under netflix’s site. You can alternatively, delete cookies and passwords from your web browser. I use Firefox, and this it has it’s own Password Manager under the Edit > Preferences menu option. If you use Internet Explorer, similiar options are under Tools > Options… Under the Content tab there is an “auto complete” button. This will give you the option to “clear passwords”.

      Your address bar got unclicked somehow, probably. Go up to the top of your screen – somewhere under the blue bar that lists Yahoo! Answers and right click – you’ll see a few choices and one will be “address bar.” It probably DOESN’T have a check next to it. Click it – and you’ll get it back.

      I have Netflix but unfortunately have no idea how long it takes. As long as you reported there was a problem they are aware of it. I reported a problem earlier this week and still it hasn’t been fixed. So at least give it a week. Then again there was a movie I reported on and in a couple of days it was taken down and has yet to be back up for instant :( But I would just move on and find something else to watch for now. Hope that helps a little.

      Nope. They may show them on their site, but they aren’t really available. Just add it to your Que and you’ll find out, because it will usually just give you an “unavailable” or “long wait”.

      Also, like REDBOX, some studios don’t allow them to handle their movies for at least a month AFTER they are released to the public.

      Of course, with Netflix it’s not a big deal, because NEW movies are next to impossible to get.

      I had netflix for about 2 yrs before i tried blockbuster on a free trial. i ended up sticking with netflix. i guess i’m just loyal to them. that whole thing with throttling was a bummer…but i think after being sued they will straighten out. they have a distribution center here in atlanta, so i receive my movies fairly quickly. both are actually good, i think.

      Yes, they have a pretty small selection. Everything that is on the site is what you will find on your Wii Netflix. They dont have Gossip Girl or One Tree Hill but they have other shows like Weeds and Heroes.

    I have netflix and the on demand thing aswell, i was watching something on it, it finished I clicked return to browzing and now everytime i try to go to netflix it brings up a blank page with this as the url : http://www.netflix.com/Error

    any ideas?

      I’m getting that. I logged in and now it just take me to a blank page. :(

    i email that to everyone every few weeks no one wants to join. i think it’s a better value and not as big a pain of going to blockbuster.

      I used to have Netflix. It’s alright. I got a movie that was so scratched up it wouldn’t play once, but that could happen if you rent it from the store too. One good thing about Netflix is that it has a better selection than my local Hollywood Video. What I don’t like about it is having to wait for the movie that I want to come in.

    What is causing the security certificate error message when I go to Netflix?
    I have a 5 year old HP desktop, and for security purposes, run Microsoft Security Essentials and MalwareBytes about once a week. In addition, for my email, I use the free version of Spamfighter. None of these tools seem to ever catch anything. Also, I have IE 8. Up until about a week ago, I would occasionally get script errors on certain pages, at least on pages from Yahoo. That seems to have stopped, but now I’m getting the following message when I go to Netflix: “There is a problem with this site’s security certificate. The security certificate presented by this web site was not issued by a trusted certificate authority.”

    I can’t get to any of these addresses on this computer:

    http://www.netflix.com

    https://www.netflix.com/login

    I’m worried about logging onto any web sites. Can you please help me with some ideas for what might be causing this problem, what I can do to fix it, and prevent this from happening in the future?

      This message basically means your browser cannot validate the ssl certificate from netflix and i think probably the issue of netflix (which is GEOTRUST) is removed from your certificate manager – trusted root certificate authority (certmgr.msc).

    When I enter the activation code from my XBOX 360 into the Netflix website, it doesn’t work, help? ?
    I’m a member of XBOX Live and Netflix. I’m trying to be able to stream movies from Netflix onto my tv through my xbox 360. Anyway, I get activation codes on xbox and it says to go to www.netflix.com/activation and enter in the code.

    Every single code I’ve tried I get this:

    WHY and how do I fix it?

      Honestly, right now is NOT a good time to be paying for this service. There is an extreme glitch on Netflix side that is causing slow and most times un playable videos. Netflix is aware of it and is working on the problem. How long will it take??? Your guess is as good as mine. Remeber this is a new service and there are bound to be kinks. I would do more research and hold off on trying to get this right now.
